The Scheepvaartkwartier / Nieuwe Werk District
The Scheepvaartkwartier or Nieuwe Werk is a district in Rotterdam, located on the banks of the Nieuwe Maas River. The district is bounded to the north by Westzeedijk, to the east by Zalmhaven and Zalmstraat, to the south by Willemskade, Westerkade, and Parkkade, and to the west by Parkhaven. The center of the Shipping Quarter is formed by the Veerhaven and the nearby Parklaan with its monumental construction from around 1900. The Caland Monument is located on the Veerkade, in memory of engineer Pieter Caland. The white monumental buildings on Westerkade (actually Javastraat and Zeemansstraat), built in an almost colonial style, dating from around 1865, are among the most beautiful in the district.
