A testament ... to choosing LOVE. ❤️"We got married in June, 2006 and barely four months into our marriage, my addictions... that I’d done really nothing about, blew our marriage to smithereens... Four months into a marriage I'm in rehab for three months. I had no idea what was going to happen to us....If you want to see what love in action really looks like, give that a whirl. Nic pushed through every negative voice, I'm sure even some of her own.And she chose LOVE. ❤️ And here we are tonight, 18 years later... Ever since she came into my life, I've been a better man." 🙏(Picture: Nicole Kidman CRIES while her husband Keith Urban gives his speech at the AFI Award)

So interesting. When we advocate for someone who has cancer or other diseases we are good parents. We are hero’s. We are a godsend. When, as parents we advocate for someone with substance use disorder we are “co-dependent”, we are “cutting them off at the knees” and we “want it worse than they do.” I have seen far too many treatment centers get it wrong and shame parents when they fight for their kids. When are treatment centers going to start behaving like other medical facilities. If you re-break a bone or have a 2nd heart attack, they don’t dismiss you and put you out on the street or send you down to a lower level of care. That would be ridiculous! No, they do a warm handoff to a higher level of care or bump you up to the ICU. But in the treatment world if you struggle, you are labeled as non-cooperative and “not wanting it” and you get kicked out.We have to do better.

Impactful remarks from the honorable Patrick Kennedy. We need an “act up” movement for addiction and mental health services. The status quo is not working and people are dying at alarming rates. This is a national crisis deserving of a FEMA type response. But it takes all the collective voices of people in recovery and their allies to change things.

Recovery is about moving towards things that serve our health and wellbeing, not about moving away from “bad” things. It’s always about addition, not subtraction.

RLS Equity Dinner is always a highlight of the conference. Hard but crucial conversations and a lot of listening create change in our systems of care. Grateful to have a seat at the table.
