Sight Word Stations in Action - Sharing Kindergarten (2024)

Sight Word Stations: I am so excited to be showing off my newest FAVORITE time of day… watch out Center Time… you have been replaced! Let’s talk about Sight Word Stations and let you see Sight Word Stations in Action!

I am head over heels, absolutely in love,and completely committed toSIGHT WORD STATIONS!

Sight Word Stations

My kids are FINALLY interacting with sight words the way they NEED to be,the way they learn,the way they apply reading.

And the best part is, this pack gives me minimal prep time! And please know, I couldn’t even use all the stations from each week even if I wanted to. Each week has 14 stations, I used 7 this week! I am giving you too much… but in a good way.

I like having too many options so I can change out my stations for the needs of my student, incorporate sight words in other areas of my classroom like morning work or daily 5, or to keep interest. If I am tired of prepping and seeing an activity…I bet my kids are tired of DOING that activity!}

Here is How We Do Sight Word Stations:

I start off the week by going over the new sight words with my class on calendar. We say the words and talk about them. Next, we find little words, word families, or silent letters.Then, we talk about whether we can sound it out or not.Additionally, we use it in a sentence.We practice spelling it out.

THEN we have fun… We go to our self-selected stations. All my centers, stations, and choices are self-selected, but you can designate where to send students if you choose.

Here is Read, Build, Write

Students read the word on the left. They cut out the letters at the bottom and glue them to the middle column to make the words, then they write the words in the last column. This is a harder station, but it is also awesome for those smarter kids and for working with words during Daily 5 or Guided Reading.

And Rainbow Words ~ Watercolors

Students use watercolors to make the words.I ask them to say the letters as they paint them and read the word at the end.

Build a Word~ Dry Erase Marker

You could easily be letter tiles, beads, or other manipulatives,

Flip and Write

You are supposed to flip the circles and WRITE these words in the box, not color the box…

But you can play it this way as well if you need differentiation.

Here is Roll the Word

This is a whole table game.There are two die options. I include a pre-made die and these types of inserts.Students roll the die and read the word. The table mates can help. Then, they write that word on the graph. They can use pencils or crayons. The first word to the top WINS.

Here is a sensory table with the table tent showing.

I know you are going to ask what these boards are… they are pretty cool!You can check them out here!

Here is the travel pack that I am using here and here is the large mat here.{I got mine at Walmart for a cheaper price though!}

Here is the Magnet Word Station.

Students use magnets to build the words.We work at these stations for 10-20 minutes at least 3 times a week, sometimes 4. This gives my kids a chance to go to at least 3-4 stations a week minimum.Is each student doing each activity perfectly?Nope!Are they doing them independently?Absolutely.

And I am listening for them to be working with the words.After all, that is the goal, not making the graph perfect.

I love hearing them working at their tables andasking another student for help with a word when they need it.I love hearing them spell out each word as they write it or build it.I LOVE hearing them laugh and giggle when they go to a station they are so excited about.

Lastly, when I assessed my kids on sight words,almost all of my kids knew the words we are working on!Honestly, we are never going to get 100% from all our students,but every kid in my class learned at least 1 new word,many of them learned 3-5,and more than half learned all 6!
