Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home 781-438-0135 MOORE, William Gerard- of Asheville, NC, died Wednesday, August 28, 2002, after a short but courageous battle with cancer at his home.

He was born in South BoSton, Massachusetts on November 23, 1923 to William Gerard Moore, Sr. and Marion Pannier Moore, both deceased. He was raised in Boston and Newport, Rhode Island and graduated from Rogers High School in Newport. He entered Army Air Corp in 1941, was stationed in Britain with the Force 379th Bomb Group, and piloted a B-17 bomber, the Birmingham Jewel, on 34 missions over Germnay. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Upon his return to the United States, he met and married Eleanor M. Wessa, now deceased, and raised five children. He got a job as a reporter Columbus Citizen and began taking classes at Ohio State University. But once again his life was interrupted, when the U.S. Air Force called him back into the service during the Korean War.

Discharged in 1952 as a Captain, he returned to Columbus, Ohio and began working fulltime for the Columbus Citizen, later the Columbus Citizen-Journal. In the late 1960s he left the Citizen-Journal as City Editor and became head of Media Relations at Nationwide Insurance. In 1971 he married Ellen Newell. In 1974 they moved to Asheville, North Carolina, where he became the City Editor of the Asheville Citizen and where he remained until his retirement in 1987. He also served on Governor James B.

Hunt's North Carolina Council on the Status of Women and was instrumental in the founding of the School of Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Asheville where he taught for many years. Retirement only meant starting a second careerwriting articles the Citizen and This Week Asheville, entering politics-elected to the' Asheville City Council and holding the post of Vice Mayor, and teaching Elderhostel courses all over the South East. A voracious reader, he will be remembered by many for his unwavering defense of his principles, his generosity, sense of humor, and innate ability to tell a good story. He is survived by his wife Ellen of Asheville, NC, sister Eleanor Danielson of RI. mother-in-law Margaret M.
